Varejo - Ceia de Azeite

Here is a great example of more traditional music on the eigenharp by "palaires". It is an entry in the 'win an Alpha' contest.

Hey everyone, here's my third entry for the ALPHA competition:

2003 composition for a Clarinet quartet, ( this time with some added instruments), for a Contemporary Dance show (around the Olive and Olive three theme).

Playing my VL1 with the PICO

Eigenlabs default controller settings place the breath controller out to cc17.  One challenge is that cc16 and 17 are used for QED controllers on the VL1.  One (easy) solution is to use MIDIPipe (from Subtlesoft) to both map the MIDI out from EigenD to your VL1 (or whatever you use) and to map the controller. to do this:

  1. Start MIDIPipe
  2. drag midi in to the pipe and choose the eigenlabs port (this presently requires the latest unstable release of eigenD)
  3. drag the message converter to the pipe and set it to map cc17 to cc2 (see screenshot)
  4. drag midi out to the pipe and select the output to your synth
Your PIPE will look something like this (I added a slide controller as well):

then have fun

Eigenlabs picture of the PICO from their website. Mine is black.

The PICO is running

Given my clumsiness with it I'm amazed I can play the wx with the same fingers (well, - not really good with that either). I guess (hope) practice will make acceptable.

Initial thoughts and observations.

  • It will load any AU one wants and will run a midi HWsynth although mapping the controllers is an interesting exercise
  • It has two modelled instruments of its own (clarinet and cello) and more are planned
  • Soundfonts are soundfonts but theirs are actually quite good (if less than expressive. They are definitely ok in a mix and the supplied piano is good for a solo
  • The amount of data this thing spews is astonishing and has not (yet) been tapped by the software
  • The software works and is stable but it is really early days. Eigenlabs are working to release a 'workbench' to create setups and an interface to 'belcanto' which is their scripting language. These are needed additions.
  • The interface is completely via the instrument. This is wonky but brilliant for performance and intriguing as a concept.

So, we got a package today. Actually Cath had to go and get it because there was quite a confusion about UPS handing off the package to Purolator and collecting taxes and so on. But it all worked out

Opening it up revealed the new PICO

An editable PICO

An editable keynote slide for the PICO

Wanna make key charts. This isn't polished, but it should work (you may need to change the font to something you have on your system if you do not have inkpen. Just click the link above to download it

If you just want a jpg you can insert somewhete, print and write on....  here it is. Just click the image and save the larger version.
